1. Download Google Authenticator on your mobile phone or tablet (if you don't have it). If you already have the Google Authenticator app, you can skip this step.
2. Open a browser on your computer that doesn't automatically login to your Gmail. For example, if you normally use Google Chrome, try using Mozilla Firefox for this step.
3. You'll get a page asking for 2-Step Verification to proceed.
4. Click More options. You'll see this under the text field where you'd enter the code from Google Authenticator.
5. Click Enter one of your 8-digit backup codes. You'll see this near the bottom of the menu, next to an icon of a lock.
6. Enter your 8-digit backup code. This is the code you were given from Google Authenticator when you first set up your account. If the code was accepted, you'll be redirected to your Gmail account.
7. Click to open the latest email from Google that says "New sign-in using a backup code." You should see this in bold font, indicating that it's unread.
8. Click the link in the email to update your 2-step verification settings. The link should be in-line with the text, saying something like "you can update your 2-Step Verification settings."
9. Click Change Phone. You'll see this in the tile for your Google Authenticator app.
10. Click to select Android or iPhone and click Next. You'll need to select which phone you are changing to. Your desktop should display a scannable image.
