1. Delete big attachments. Start by deleting the emails that feature big attachments; these are likely taking up a disproportionate amount of space in your inbox, reducing your available storage in Gmail.
2. Delete entire categories. Gmail offers a number of “categories” you can use to sort your inbox. When active, Gmail will automatically detect incoming emails that meet these category criteria, and sort them appropriately.
3. Unsubscribe from annoying lists. Most of us get at least a few emails every day from lists we subscribed to a long time ago, but are no longer relevant—or maybe we ended up on a list we never subscribed to in the first place.
4. Block unwanted senders. Next, consider blocking any unwanted senders that are flooding your inbox. Are there any persistent salespeople that just won’t leave you alone?
5. Delete by sender. Clean up your inbox efficiently by looking for senders that no longer matter. For example, is there a client you no longer work with?
6. Delete by date. Again, you can head to the advanced search mode of Gmail to look for emails that meet certain criteria. This time, try sorting by date.
7. Delete by content. Are you interested in deleting all emails that have to do with a specific subject, or those that include certain words or phrases in the body content?
8. Create new labels. In Outlook, users organize emails with the help of a system of folders and subfolders. But in Gmail, things work a little bit differently; rather than physically moving an email to one specific folder or trying to copy it to multiple folders, you’ll create labels and assign those labels however you see fit.
9. Make use of organization features. Gmail comes loaded with a number of features meant to make it easier for email users to stay organized. For example, you can mark emails as read or unread to determine their status, use stars to immediately mark valuable emails to keep long-term, and use importance markers to identify emails that still require a response.

How To Free Up Space In Gmail: 5 Ways To Reclaim Space

Preview

1. Search for Attachments. Attachments can take up a lot of space. Deleting messages with large attachments can free up space a lot quicker than deleting small, text-only messages.
2. Use an IMAP Client. You can access your Gmail over any email client that supports IMAP, like Mozilla Thunderbird. When you access an account over IMAP, you manipulate messages directly on the server – any changes you make in the email program will be reflected in your Gmail account.
3. Scan Your Account. Find Big Mail is a third-party service that scans your account for big mail. If you don’t want to bother with an IMAP client, this is a quick, web-based way to find large email messages.
4. Remove Bulk Mail. Chances are you get a lot of bulk mail – newsletters, notifications, mailing list messages, and other things — especially if your account is packed full of email.
5. Empty the Trash. When you delete a message, it gets sent to the trash, where it continues to take up space. Don’t forget to empty your trash to actually free up space after following these tips.

1. Identify email you can delete. You might think all your emails are precious, but they're not. Most people subscribe to newsletters and news alerts that are valuable in the moment but become clutter immediately after.
2. Seek. On your computer, head to Gmail.com, and click on one of the repeat emails you've identified. Once open, click on the three dot icon at the top of the email on at the far right side of the icon menu.
3. Seek older emails. Companies will sometimes change the email addresses they use to send newsletters and alerts, so you may also want to find older versions of those emails and repeat this process.
4. Destroy. Deleted emails disappear from your inbox, but they'll linger for another 30 days in your Trash. If you're in desperate need for space, scroll down on the left-hand menu of the screen and open your Trash folder.
5. Unsubscribe. Now that you've cleared up space, you can also take a step to keep your inbox open using the Gmail unsubscribe button. You can use this feature to easily stop receiving any clutter newsletters you no longer want.
6. Set up filters. Now that you're cleared out, let's do something about that constantly rising counter of unread emails. I suggest using Gmail's filter features to automatically mark certain emails read without deleting them.

5 Quick Ways To Free Up Space In Your Gmail Account

Preview

1. Delete files. The Gmail search box lets you look for specific file types—try searching for filename:mp3 or filename:mov to locate those larger attachments that you can really do without.
2. Plain text and quotes. HTML emails—with their embedded images and formatted text—don't take up much more room than plain text ones, but if you're talking about 100s of emails a day over the course of several years then it can add up.
3. Erase old emails. The Gmail search box can help you find older messages that you're never going to look at again. Try entering older_than:2y to see all emails from more than two years ago—select all, hit the trash button, and they're gone forever.
4. Search by size. Once upon a time you couldn't search for emails by size in Gmail, but now you most certainly can. Enter larger:5m to find messages of 5MB or above, or open up the search drop-down dialog and use the size option there.
5. Download local copies. If you can't bear to lose your older or larger Gmail messages forever, download a copy to your local email client of choice. By switching on POP or IMAP through the settings page you can get your messages into a desktop program and then save or export them as required.
